"Heavyweight" is not a regulated word. Any brand can print it on any hoodie. The number that means something is GSM, and most listings that avoid printing it are avoiding it for a reason.
What GSM actually measures
GSM is grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric itself, measured over a fixed area, so it compares like with like regardless of the size of the garment. Higher GSM means more yarn in the same space, which usually means denser, warmer and more structured.
Rough ranges for hooded fleece:
- 180 to 250GSM. Lightweight. Summer layers and most fast-fashion hoodies. You can often see light through the fabric.
- 280 to 320GSM. Midweight. The most common range on the high street. Fine, and the point where most brands start saying "heavyweight".
- 350GSM and up. Genuinely heavy. Holds a shape on its own, sits away from the body, and is warm without a jacket.
The gap between 280 and 350 sounds small written down. In the hand it is obvious immediately, which is the frustrating part of buying online.
GSM is not the whole story
A high number on a badly made garment still gets you a bad garment. Two things change what the same GSM feels like.
The blend. Pure cotton feels excellent and behaves poorly. It shrinks, it takes an age to dry, and it loses shape at the cuffs and hem faster than people expect. Polyester in the mix resists shrinking, dries faster and holds structure. A 50/50 blend, which is what we use, is the common middle ground: soft against you, stable over time.
The construction. Brushed fleece has been mechanically raised on the inside to trap air. It is why one 350GSM hoodie feels warm and soft while another feels like board. Look for "brushed" or "brushed back" in the description.
Five checks that take ten seconds
If you can hold it, this is the whole test:
- Hold it up to a window. If you can see the shape of your hand through the body, it is light, whatever the label says.
- Squeeze the cuff and let go. Good ribbing springs back. Ribbing that stays squashed is what turns into floppy cuffs in a month.
- Pull gently across the shoulder seam. You are looking for stitching that stays flat rather than gaping. Doubled stitching at the shoulder is a good sign.
- Scratch the print with a fingernail. A heat-pressed transfer feels like a plastic sticker sitting on top and has a visible edge. A screen print feels like part of the fabric.
- Hold it by the shoulders and look at the drape. Heavy fabric hangs straight down. Light fabric clings to itself and creases.
Buying online, you are limited to the spec sheet. A brand that publishes GSM, blend and flat measurements is telling you it has nothing to hide. One that says "premium heavyweight cotton feel" and no numbers is selling you an adjective.
Why heavier costs more
It is mostly fabric. A 350GSM hoodie uses meaningfully more yarn than a 250GSM one in the same size, and fabric is the largest single input in the cost. Heavier fabric also runs slower on the machines and needs stronger stitching at the stress points.
That is the honest reason heavyweight hoodies sit at a higher price, and the reason a $25 hoodie is almost never one. It is not a margin story. There is simply more material in it.
