A good black hoodie should look the same in two years. Most do not, and it is rarely the hoodie's fault. Three things do the damage: heat, friction, and the wrong detergent. Fix those and the same garment lasts several times longer.
Heat is what actually fades black
Hot water opens up the fibre and lets dye leave. Every hot wash takes a little more colour with it, and the loss is permanent. Black does not fade evenly either. It goes slightly brown or grey, usually across the shoulders and the front where the light hits.
Wash cold. Not warm. Cold, on a gentle cycle. Modern detergents are formulated to work at low temperatures, so you lose nothing in cleaning and you keep the colour.
The dryer is worse than the wash. Tumble drying combines high heat with constant abrasion, which fades the dye and softens the fabric structure at the same time. It is also what shrinks a hoodie and pulls the shoulders out of shape. Hang it or lay it flat. It takes longer and it is the single highest-value habit here.
Turn it inside out, every time
Fading is partly mechanical. In the drum, the outer face of the garment rubs against everything else in the load, and that abrasion lifts fibres and dulls the surface. Turning the hoodie inside out means the inside takes the beating instead.
It protects the print for the same reason. A screen print sits on the surface of the fabric. Rubbing it against a zip, a button, or a pair of jeans for forty minutes is what starts the cracking you see on old tees.
While you are at it, wash it with like colours and do not overload the machine. A packed drum means more friction and worse rinsing.
Detergent, and the optical brightener problem
Many everyday detergents contain optical brighteners. They do not remove stains, they deposit a compound that reflects light to make whites look whiter. On black fabric that reads as a dull grey film, and it builds up over months.
If your blacks are going flat despite cold washing, this is usually why. A plain detergent, or one made for darks, avoids it. Use less than you think you need, since undissolved detergent leaves residue that does the same thing.
Skip fabric softener on fleece. It coats the fibres, which flattens the brushed inside that makes a heavyweight hoodie feel the way it does.
What kills a screen print
Screen printing puts ink into and onto the fabric, which is why it lasts far longer than a heat-pressed transfer. It still has two enemies.
- Direct heat. Never iron the print. If the garment needs pressing, turn it inside out and press the back of the print on low, or press around it.
- The dryer, again. Heat plus tumbling is how prints crack. Air drying alone will keep a print looking new for years.

Wash it less than you think
A hoodie worn over a t-shirt is not in contact with much skin. Unless it is marked or it smells, it does not need a wash after every wear. Airing it overnight resets it more often than not.
This is the least appealing advice in any care guide and it is the most effective. Every wash costs a little colour and a little structure. Halving the number of washes roughly halves that cost.
The part that happens before you buy
Care habits extend the life of a garment. They cannot rescue a bad one. A thin, loosely knitted fleece will go shapeless whatever you do, because there is not enough fabric to hold a shape in the first place.
Weight is the quickest signal. Ours is 350GSM, in a 50/50 cotton and polyester blend. The cotton is why it feels soft against you, and the polyester is a large part of why it keeps its shape and resists shrinking in a way pure cotton does not.
