Modest Gym Wear for Muslim Men: What Actually Works

Covering navel to knee at the gym sounds simple until you are mid-squat in shorts that ride up.

Published September 2026 · 6 min read

The gym is one of the few places where dressing modestly takes actual planning. Most training clothing is designed to be short and tight, for reasons that make sense athletically and none that help you.

The requirement for men is straightforward: cover from the navel to the knee. Doing it while squatting, pressing and sweating is the part nobody writes about. Again, we are speaking as people who train, not as scholars. Take the rulings from people of knowledge and take the practical notes from us.

Shorts are where it usually goes wrong

Standard gym shorts finish above the knee standing up, which means they finish well above it in a squat or a lunge. Length is the first thing to solve.

Look for shorts that sit below the knee when you are standing. That gives you the margin you need once you start moving. The inseam number on the label is more reliable than the photo: around 9 inches or more works for most heights, and taller brothers should go longer again.

Joggers solve it completely and are the easier answer in winter. The trade-off is heat. In an Australian summer, in a gym with weak air conditioning, full-length trousers get unpleasant fast. Many people run joggers through the cold months and long shorts through the warm ones.

Compression, and the thing nobody says out loud

Compression leggings under shorts are common in gyms and are worth thinking about carefully. They cover skin, but they are skin-tight, and covering with something that traces the shape underneath does not really achieve what covering is for.

If you like the support, wear them under something loose that reaches the knee. The layer on top is what is doing the modest work. Worn alone, they are the same problem as shorts that are too short, with extra steps.

Tops: long enough to stay put

The top matters less than the bottom half, since the navel-to-knee requirement is the binding one. It still helps to wear something that stays where you put it. A t-shirt that rides up every time you press overhead is a small, constant distraction.

A slightly longer body solves it. So does not buying the tightest size available. Loose through the chest and shoulders also just moves better under load.

The walk in and the walk out

You are dressed for more than the session. The car park, the walk from the station, the servo on the way home, and the ten minutes you spend on a bench between sets getting cold.

A hoodie handles all of it. It goes on over your training gear, covers you properly on the way in and out, keeps your shoulders warm during warm-ups, and comes off when you start working. Most people who train regularly own one for exactly this reason and never think about why.

The one thing to check is weight. A thin hoodie is useless in a cold car park and a very heavy one is a nuisance in a gym bag. A structured 350GSM fleece like our United Ummah Hoodie is warm enough to matter in a Melbourne winter and holds its shape after being stuffed in a bag, which a lighter one will not.

Fabric, and why pure cotton is a poor training choice

Cotton absorbs sweat and holds onto it. That is fine on a walk and unpleasant during a session, because the wet fabric stays heavy and cold against you long after you stop.

Polyester and blends move moisture rather than soaking it up, and they dry much faster. For the training layer itself, a technical fabric is the sensible pick. For the layer over the top, a blend gives you the softness of cotton without the sponge effect. Ours is 50/50 cotton and polyester for that reason.

A setup that works year round

Nothing here needs a specialist retailer. It needs a few deliberate choices:

  • Long shorts in summer, joggers in winter. Below the knee, standing.
  • A t-shirt with enough length to stay down when your arms go up.
  • Compression only under something loose, if you want it at all.
  • One good hoodie for arriving, warming up and leaving.

Get those right and covering properly stops being something you manage during the session. It is just what you are wearing.

If the hoodie is the gap, ours is in Black, White and Navy, sizes S to L, $50 down from $69.99. Australia ships flat $9.99, the US and Canada free, and returns are open for 14 days if the fit is wrong.
